There are two distinct trends for communication transfer of audio and data today. One for long distances - glass fiber and now for short interconnect type applications the Plastic Optic Fiber is establishing itself as the way forward. Selectronic, with its long history in
optoelectronics, is getting involved in the two key areas of this new technology - the receiver and transmitter.
This technology is establishing its advantages in two areas - the home for connection of audio and communication devices, and in the automotive sector, where new vehicles fitted with state of the art visual/audio displays require fast interconnection.
Why POF?
The interconnection problems of different equipment within the home are a long-standing issue. With POF, the advantages of the compact dimensions of fiber optic transmission, in built protection from external interference,
high speed transmitting ability and low costs are clear.
Within automotive stringent electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) requirements where many electronic packages are combined this new technology is establishing an advantage. As well as optimum EMC performances there is the benefit of lower weight and the ease of integration of other types of equipment which will be increasingly incorporated in to the vehicle.
POF has the advantage of being low cost, with easy linkage and much less interference. All products can be inter-connected and can talk to each other effectively.

This technology is coming to life via the DVD player, PS2, Mini Disc (MD), Set Top Box and high-end audio systems. This will be applicable in the home and in the car.
